Syracuse football took Florida State to the wire this past Saturday and returned home with the aim of not just getting back in the win column but doing so against a ranked team in No. 19 Wake Forest.
The Orange (3-2) have received the press that the defeat was undeserved, and many question the officiating and questionable calls.
The Seminoles earned their first win of the season on a field goal with time expiring for a 33-30 win on home grass.
Syracuse goes from the fire to the frying pan with their upcoming date in the Carrier Dome vs. the Demon Deacons. Wake enters Week 6 with a perfect 5-0 mark and is atop the Atlantic Division standings.
Wake Forest, like FSU, earned a win over their Saturday foe with a late field goal, a 37-34 victory versus the Louisville Cardinals.
The Deacons present some of the same hurdles for the Orange that the Noles did. Save Wake is more disciplined and can be methodical if they so choose. The Deacons can play fast or be deliberate and have been much dependent on the opposition.
The Deacons recorded 324 passing yards and 177 rushing yards in their Week 5 win over the Cards.
Wake presents a much more consistent and reliable scheme but dangerous nonetheless.
Last year's meet between these two found the Deacons on the winning side of a 38-14 final. The game wasn't as close as the final score, and the visual of a 24-point loss is enough in itself.
Yards and points on Saturday won't come as easily against Wake as they did versus a porous Noles defense. Cuse quarterback Garrett Shrader, making his second-straight start, presents a defense challenge, being more of a dual-threat than traditional schemes.
The Orange allowed 33 points, and that total could well have been larger.
The handicap in this contest offers value with the game being played in middle New York.
The close call that Wake had at home against the Tigers also presents us with some opening line value as the opening number that offered Syracuse at home has attracted some early money.
Syracuse has been as good as their skill-set allows with a victory over Liberty in Week 4 and last week's competitive contest vs. Florida State. To our advantage in this ACC matchup, the Deacs are not as public as are the Seminoles, and the eye candy that the Orange have provided in the last two weeks has artificially provided a large number of Syracuse backers optimism.
Saturday's final score won't create continued hope that Syracuse has returned to ACC relevance as Wake pushes the pace. Once Syracuse is on their heels and chasing the scoreboard, the Deacs create a mistake or more by the Orange and their field general Shrader and stretch a double-digit lead to 20-plus before all is said and done.
Play Wake Forest minus the points at the Carrier Dome in a mid-afternoon Week 6 Saturday event.
